UW Derm Volunteers Visit Mary's Place Women’s Day Center
UW Dermatology faculty, staff and trainees volunteered at the Mary's Place Women’s Day Center in Seattle on Tuesday, Sept.14, part of Women's Dermatologic Society's Women's Shelter Initiative.
Residents and medical students helped led a presentation on "skin care basics" and "common skin disorders," and were able to provide more information and answer questions throughout the presentation. The Women's Day Center staff also provided lunch and goody bags to all participants.
"Connecting with the Mary’s Place community was wonderful," says Rachael Ward, MD, MPH, who is currently a UW Dermatology resident. "The women we spoke with were eager to learn about skincare and other common skin conditions. The staff’s dedication to serving their community was truly inspiring. This volunteer experience allowed me the time to think deeply about the major problem of accessibility in dermatology and other medical specialties. I am excited to enrich our work with Mary’s Place in the future."
Thank you to Mary’s Place volunteer coordinators Javin Smith and Michael Wubbenhorst, the UW Derm Volunteerism Committee, and all our volunteers; Dr. Meredith Sheedy, Dr. Michi Shinohara, Dr. Rachael Ward, visiting medical student Keesha Jeter and UW Derm admin team members Tamara Zurita, Alyssa Deguzman and Liz Wright.
