Meet Alyssa Deguzman (she/her), Executive Assistant to the Associate Chief of Dermatology and Staff HR Manager!

When did you start working at the University of Washington?

My career with UW started back in 2016, spending my first three years at the UW Contact Center where I did scheduling for over 200 UW clinics and assisted with onboarding new representatives. Later, as a Patient Care Coordinator with the UW Heart Institute, I handled scheduling new patient consults and all inpatient and outpatient cardiac procedures performed by the Structural Heart Team.

What is your work and educational background?

I graduated from Western Washington University in 2014 with a B.S. in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Accounting. I have worked in the healthcare field for over seven years.

What drew you to your current role at UW?

I was ready for a new challenge in my career! A majority of my career had been heavily involved with patient scheduling and I was looking for an opportunity to learn something new.

Tell us about your position; what does a typical day look like?

My position's responsibilities include providing admin support for our Associate Chief, Dr. Michi Shinohara, managing the recruitment and onboarding process for division staff, planning division-wide events, managing faculty after-hour call schedules and providing admin support for the Executive Committee, Volunteerism Committee, Education/Site Directors Monthly meetings and Academic Workgroup meetings.

On a typical day, I am following up with ongoing staff recruitment and hiring tasks, coordinating meetings for Dr. Shinohara and updating agenda’s for the committee’s/workgroups meetings that I support.

What's the best part of your job?

I enjoy the different challenges every week, and that no week is ever the same as the last! The variety of responsibilities I have always keeps me on my toes and engaged. Also, I am thankful that all faculty and staff I work with in division and the Department of Medicine are always very supportive and helpful while I continue to navigate my role and become more successful.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and finding new restaurants and coffee shops. My boyfriend Edmond and I love to ski, snowboard and golf together with our families and friends. During the warmer months, we enjoy spending time with family in our backyard having BBQ’s and playing fun games!
