Faculty, residents and fellows from the UW Division of Dermatology had the opportunity to connect with local Seattle high school students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare at the virtual Doctor For A Day (DFAD) event on Saturday, April 2, 2022.

The Dermatology Workshop welcomed around 50 curious students eager to learn more about the science of dermatology and what the road to become a doctor and dermatologist really looks like. UW Dermatology faculty, residents and fellows led students through an interactive presentation which included fun games with a chance to win prizes. Topics included common skin conditions, the language used in dermatology to describe skin lesions, and an introduction to dermatopathology.

“The event turned out really well,” says Dr. Rachael Ward, Co-Chief Resident, who was the lead organizer of the Dermatology Workshop with support from UW Dermatology’s faculty, staff, and members of the Volunteerism Committee. “It felt incredible to introduce so many high school students to Dermatology! We really enjoyed teaching and playing games with the students and answering their excellent questions. The future is bright in medicine!”

Huge appreciation to all the students who participated in our DFAD Dermatology Workshop! Thank you for your questions, curiosity and commitment to academic success, we can’t wait to work alongside you one day!

Doctor For A Day

The Doctor for a Day (DFAD) program was established in 2014 by the University of Washington School of Medicine Student National Medical Association (SNMA), which is comprised of first through fourth year medical students. DFAD’s mission is “to expose, inspire and cultivate underrepresented disadvantaged middle and high school students in Seattle and the greater Seattle area to enter careers in healthcare.” Students in DFAD are given the opportunity to attend workshops which provide education, direct mentorship with those in the field, and exposure to careers in healthcare they may wish to pursue.
