Josiah Hanson, MDJosiah Hanson, MD

Resident, Chief Resident

Post-graduation plans

Josiah is eager and excited (and a little bit trepidacious) to continue on with the UW with clinic at Roosevelt and SCCA in addition to attending on the UWMC inpatient service. He looks forward to applying the invaluable training he has received here at the UW and continuing to learn and find joy in clinic and with his colleagues.

In the summer of 2022, he will be leaving the Pacific Northwest and traveling to Danville, PA, to complete a fellowship in Dermatopathology at Geisinger Medical Center under the tutelage of Dr. Tamme Ferringer. Following that he hopes to return to Seattle and reconnect with the University of Washington.

Highlight of training

“As cliché as it sounds, I have most valued the people I have trained with, the staff I have worked with, and the attendings I have learned from throughout my training. The people make the practice and UW Dermatology is an institution I am proud to be part of. From COVID trivia parties to clam-digging and cookouts, to late-night GIFing with an attending on-call, this has been three years to be forever remembered and treasured.”

Dan Leifer, MDDan Leifer, MD

Resident

Post-graduation plans

“I'll do medical and pediatric dermatology at Skagit Regional Health, spending 2 days a week at Mount Vernon and 2 days a week at Smokey Point. I look forward to working alongside graduating Peds-Derm fellow Dr. Barton.”

Highlight of training

“The faculty's investment in teaching, and the program's commitment to our professional development.”

Benji Perin, MDBenji Perin, MD

Resident

Post-graduation plans

“I will be joining the UW Derm Division with my clinical site at the VA, primarily at our American Lake Campus near Tacoma.”

Highlight of training

“When I think back about what I value most about residency, I can hardly believe how much has been invested in each of us. I'm astounded at the time and energy that went into giving us closely supervised responsibility in so many different settings, with so many excellent teachers. Because of the thousands of one-on-one conversations about differentials and management, the team-room chatter about interesting cases, the hands-on coaching with surgical technique from many different attendings, and the culture of excellent care in UW Dermatology, we're ready to take on real challenges in the clinic after graduation. I think best of all, our teachers have been role models who practice medicine with integrity, who take pleasure in the challenge of serving folks who need us most. “

S. Max Vale, MDS. Max Vale, MD

Resident, Chief Resident

Post-graduation plans

Dr. Vale will be joining the faculty at UW Dermatology, with clinics at Roosevelt and SCCA (Seattle Cancer Care Alliance).

Highlight of training

“The meaningful long-term relationships (and friendships!) cultivated with dermatologists at UW and in the community. I am deeply appreciative of the advice and mentoring I have received from so many wonderful and kind dermatologists.”

Thomas Long, MDThomas Long, MD

Dermatopathology Fellow

Post-graduation plans

“I will be practicing at Central Oregon Pathology Consultants in Bend, Oregon.”

Highlight of training

“The people I met, cared for, and worked with in the clinic and around the microscope were the highlight of my fellowship. The dermatology faculty and residents are an outstanding group and I will miss them as educators, colleagues, and friends!”

Mike Barton, MDMike Barton, MD

Pediatric Dermatology Fellow

Post-graduation plans

“Post-graduation plans are to join Skagit Regional Health in Mount Vernon, WA and start training my newborn daughter for the 2040 WNBA draft.”

Highlight of training

“I have valued the immense amount of knowledge gained from and laughs shared with a stellar group of attendings, nurses, MAs and ancillary staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital. “

Allene Fonseca, MDAllene Fonseca, MD

Clinical Research Fellow

Post-graduation plans

Dr. Fonseca will be moving from the Pacific Northwest to Los Angeles and Los Angeles, CA area to work as an internal medicine physician for a year before starting her dermatology residency in the summer of 2022.
