Dr. Kendra Bergstrom Sheds Light on the Causes and Treatments for "Maskne" on Seattle Q13 News
Dr. Kendra Bergstrom, clinical assistant professor, recently gave an interview on Seattle Fox Q13 News to discuss "maskne", the breakouts many people are seeing on their face due to wearing masks.
While wearing a mask is essential for reducing the spread of the coronavirus, many people are noticing that the more they wear them, the more they're seeing blemishes on their skin. Dr. Bergstrom explains that our masks are meant to create a seal around our nose and mouth that, while stopping droplets from spreading to others, also traps humidity.
If you are noticing breakouts around where your mask usually sits, Dr. Bergstrom says to try changing up the shape and style of your mask, stick to non-irritating fabrics like cotton, and wash your mask often. It is also important to wash your face at least nightly, and to keep your skincare routine simple, so as to not dry out your face (often a signal for your skin to produce more oil). You may also want to do some research - if your skin isn't clearing up, you may be experiencing a rash or allergic reaction to a material in your mask and will want to consult a physician.
