Dr. Lisa Maier Shares Her Perspective on Two New Studies

Dr. Lisa Maier, Clinical Associate Professor and Co-Associate Program Director for the Dermatology Residency Program, recently shared her perspective on two studies featured on Medscape Medical News.

The first article, “Foot Dermatitis Can Be Allergic Reaction to Topical Antifungals,” published March 25, 2022, delves into a new study from Portugal which investigated the frequency and associated factors of contact allergy to topical antifungal antibiotics (TAFs). According to the study, contact allergy to topical antifungal antibiotics is not common and is most often seen in association with foot dermatitis.

"Given the widespread use of topical antifungals, it is surprising and reassuring that antifungal contact allergy isn't more common," Dr. Maier said. "This finding is in keeping with other studies that have shown overall low rates of contact allergy to antifungals." 

The second article, “Hidden Formaldehyde in Products Linked to Allergic Reactions,” published March 31, 2022, found that hidden formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers found in many cosmetics and other products, including personal protective equipment to shield healthcare workers from COVID-19, provoke allergic reactions in some people, according to the study.

"This useful, comprehensive review highlights why it is so challenging for our patients with formaldehyde allergy to avoid exposure to this chemical, and why the prevalence of sensitization is so high.”
