UW Dermatology Volunteers at 2023 Seattle/King County Clinic
Joining thousands of volunteers from across the region, this past weekend faculty, trainees and staff from the UW Division of Dermatology participated in the 2023 Seattle/King County Clinic, running April 27-30, 2023, at Seattle Center.
This year’s SKCC was the first full, in-person clinic offered since the pandemic — providing free dental, medical, and eye care to people who struggle to access or afford healthcare.
At this year’s clinic, about 1,600 patients received dental care, 1,000 received eye care, and just under 2,000 received medical care. Physicians in the SKCC dermatology clinic saw approximately 30-35 patients each day, addressing many different skin concerns including eczema, psoriasis, mole checks, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, melasma, among others. Altogether, dermatology provided an estimated $35,000 in services over the four days.
As in previous years, the vast majority of patients cited a lack of insurance or being underinsured as their primary barriers to receiving care. Most SKCC patients have housing and work part time or full-time jobs to make ends meet.

Special thank you's to Drs. Greg Wolgamot, Samir Masters and Casey Carlos for their contributions by helping facilitate necessary biopsies after the event.
And to Abby Martinez, Complex Medical Dermatology Research Fellow, who contributed a very helpful new set of patient information sheets to distribute, and for organizing a division-wide donation drive for skin care/hygiene products which patients were thankful to receive at the clinic.
