World AIDS Day: Dr. Sigrid Collier Spotlights Inequity in HIV-associated Cancer Treatment

In recognition of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, 2022, Sigrid Collier, MD, MPH, and colleagues collaborated on a blog post highlighting their research in HIV-associated cancer and the inequities facing patients in sub-Saharan Africa for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center for Global Health Spotlight Blog.

The post, “World AIDS Day: Focusing the Lens on Equity for HIV-Associated Cancers - the Case of Kaposi Sarcoma,” was co-authored by fellow NIH grantees, Esther E. Freeman, M.D., Ph.D., from Harvard Medical School, and Aggrey Semeere, MBChB, MMed, from Makerere University in Uganda.

Keeping with this year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV,” Drs. Collier, Freeman and Semeere, share their experiences treating patients with Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), an HIV-associated cancer, in Uganda and Kenya. Many of these patients face inequities in access to care, in addition to the stigma that persists among people living with HIV/AIDS.
