Drs. Alam & Crimp Receive Funding for ACGME Patient Engagement Project
Congratulations to Dr. Mariam Alam, PGY2, and Dr. Caitlin Crimp, PGY3, Co-Chief Resident, whose research project has been selected to receive funding through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) Back to Bedside program.
Drs. Alam and Crimp will co-lead a project titled, “Mitigating Bias and Burnout Through Patient-Centered Narrative Medicine,” focused on developing a narrative medicine curriculum for dermatology residents, with the aim to improve residents' understanding and connection to patients and mitigate both bias and resident burnout. Dr. Andrea Kalus, Associate Professor, and Dr. Michi Shinohara, Associate Chief for the Division of Dermatology, will both serve as faculty mentors for the project.
Dr. Alam and Crimp’s proposal was one of 21 projects selected though a competitive application process to receive funding through ACGME’s Back to Bedside, which support resident and fellow efforts to increase connection with their patients. Back to Bedside is designed to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that foster meaning and joy in work and allow them to engage on a deeper level with their patients.
Supported by the ACGME, Back to Bedside provides funding opportunities for resident and fellow-led teams to innovate. The initiative is also intended to create a “Learning Collaborative” of resident and fellow-led research teams. Drs. Alam and Crimp will both attend the next Learning Collaborative in Chicago from August 14-15, 2022.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Alam and Dr. Crimp for earning this fantastic achievement!
