Dr. Paul Nghiem Inducted into Association of American of Physicians

Please join us in congratulating Paul Nghiem, MD, PhD, Chair of the UW Department of Dermatology, on his election to the prestigious Association of American Physicians (AAP). He was formally inducted during the organization’s annual meeting on April 26 in Chicago, where members gathered to share their scientific contributions and discoveries. Dr. Nghiem was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Stephanie Lee, a past AAP inductee herself.  

Dr. Nghiem was one of only 70 physicians elected from the US, Canada, and other countries, to join the AAP, which is often regarded as one of the top honors in the field of health and medicine. Dr. Nghiem was recognized for his pioneering role in understanding the immunobiology of Merkel cell carcinoma, which has led to markedly more effective treatments as well as new ways to detect recurrences earlier. 

Election to the AAP recognizes physician-scientists who exhibit excellence in the pursuit of medical knowledge and the advancement of basic or translational science through experimentation and discovery and its application to clinical medicine.

The AAP is an honorific, elected society of America’s leading physician-scientists who exemplify the pinnacle of pioneering and enduring, impactful contributions to improve health. It seeks to inspire the full breadth of physician-led research across all fields of science related to medicine and health, and to build a community of physician scientists in support of the principle that objective science and evidence are essential foundations for improving patient care and the health of Americans. 

Each year, the AAP holds an annual meeting of physician-scientists to showcase and share science and communicate on issues of science and practice for the public good. In partnership with other societies including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, AAP offers mentorship and role models for physician-scientists who are early in their careers.
