Faculty and traineesOn Saturday, October 5, 2019, a group from UW Dermatology including Drs Andrea Kalus, Jay Vary and 5 medical students had a lot of fun partnering with The Eli’s Park Project (https://www.elispark.org) at their community event!

The goal was promoting shade in the park. The team spoke with families about sun safety, measured UV intensity in the shade, in the sun and under the tent.  Even with dense cloud coverage in October, an hour of exposure without shade delivered 100mJ/cm2 of UVB.  When the sun came out that went up to 360mJ/cm2!

The team helped kids make bracelets with UV reactive beads and solve sun safety related puzzles.  Dr. Kalus recalls one of the highlights of the day was overhearing a little girl doing a word search exclaim, “I found melanoma!”

A BIG thanks to the 5 medical students (Isabela, Heather, Jolie, Malika, and Sarah) that joined Dr. Vary and Dr. Kalus making the event possible!
