UW Dermatology is excited to welcome Abigail Martinez (she/her/hers) to our division next month as a Complex Medical Dermatology Research Fellow under the guidance of faculty mentor, Dr. Michi Shinohara, Associate Chief. 

Abigail is currently a third-year medical student at Albany Medical College, and will begin her fellowship on July 1, 2022. As a research fellow, Abigail will have the opportunity to deepen her exposure to dermatology, connect with faculty mentors and further develop her skills and experience in clinical research.

Abigail Martinez

Abigail MartinezAbigail Martinez (she/her/hers) is currently a third-year medical student at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. A first-generation Cuban-American, Abigail is originally from Miami, Florida. She graduated with her BS in General Biology (Cum Laude) from Florida International University in 2018, in addition to earning a Certificate in Medical Physiology from the University of Florida.

Abigail has been involved in several research projects focused on topics including pediatric kidney transplants, wound healing and skin tumors, acne and eczema, and hyperphosphatemia. She has also engaged in non-clinical research focused on developing tools for learning STEM and diversity in medical school leadership. She is a strong advocate for underrepresented students and has held several leadership positions to support these communities. She is currently the Treasurer for Albany Medical College’s Latino Medical Student Association, the Association of Women Surgeons, Co-President of the Dermatology Interest Group and has previously been the Co-Chair of the Underrepresented Students Alliance.

Her clinical and research interests include rheumatologic and oncologic dermatology. When she is not working as a tutor or volunteering in her community, Abigail enjoys painting, pencil sketching, baking, writing, and spending time with her mini poodle.
