Dr. Peter Goff Joins UW Department of Radiation Oncology
Congratulations to Peter Goff, MD, PhD, Nghiem Lab researcher, resident in the UW Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology and American Board of Radiology Holman Research Pathway candidate, who has officially accepted a position to join the UW Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology as an Acting Instructor on July 1, 2022. In addition to teaching, Dr. Goff will continue his research in Merkel cell carcinoma at the Nghiem Lab.
“I am excited to join the clinical faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology while continuing my research in Dr. Paul Nghiem’s lab,” says Dr. Goff. “UW and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance have provided an outstanding residency training environment, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving this community.”
Dr. Goff came to the University of Washington in July 2018 to become a Holman Pathway resident physician in the UW Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology. In 2019, Dr. Goff joined the Nghiem Lab research team to support its innovative research on Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Under the direction of Dr. Nghiem, Dr. Goff’s laboratory mentor and Head of the UW Medicine Division of Dermatology, Dr. Goff began his research focused on how DNA damage response inhibitors enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy and augment anti-tumor immunity in the laboratory in Merkel cell carcinoma.
Dr. Goff and the Nghiem Lab research team have received several awards, grants and donations to support its research, including a $30,000 grant from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), $20,000 in award funding through Seattle Translational Tumor Research (STTR), and a $30,000 donation from Kathleen and Richard Lyons, UW Medicine donors.
Prior to coming to the UW, Dr. Goff earned his BA in Biochemistry from Middlebury College and his ALM (Master’s in liberal arts) focused in Biology from Harvard University. He completed his MD, PhD, and medical internship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
The ABR’s B. Leonard Holman Research Pathway (HRP) program is designed for medical trainees interested in pursuing a research-oriented career in academic diagnostic radiology (DR) and radiation oncology (RO). The program allows individuals to train in radiation oncology and in basic, clinical, or translational investigations to address the shortage of physician investigators in radiation oncology.
“I am confident that Dr. Goff will continue to build on this strong foundation at the University of Washington to help grow our precision radiation oncology bench to bedside program,” says Dr. Ramesh Rengan, Professor and Chair for the Department of Radiation Oncology. “We are extremely fortunate to have him join our faculty, and look forward to working with him for many years to come!”
