Congratulations to UW Dermatology resident, Dr. Caitlin Crimp, who has been selected to present at the American Society of Dermatopathology’s (ASDP) 58th Virtual Annual Meeting, happening October 20-24, 2021.

Dr. Caitlin CrimpDr. Crimp, a second-year resident in the Division of Dermatology, will share a poster presentation with attendees titled, “Double Trouble: A Rare Basomelanocytic Tumor.” The presentation follows a case report on a rare combined basal cell carcinoma and melanocytic tumor. The presentation is intended to help medical trainees and pathologists better recognize combined basal cell carcinoma and melanocytic tumors, for which the most appropriate classification and management remains uncertain.

According to the American Cancer Society, basal cell carcinoma (also called basal cell skin cancer) is the most common type of skin cancer found in the US. About eight out of ten skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas (also called basal cell cancers).

Dr. Crimp was assisted in her research by Dr. Michi Shinohara, Associate Professor for the Division of Dermatology, Associate Chief for the Division of Dermatology and Director of Dermatopathology, Dr. Anna Cogen, Assistant Professor and Director of Dermatology Inpatient Consultation Service, and Dr. Thomas Long, former UW dermatopathology fellow.

“I first became interested in pathology before medical school, working as a gross technician and lab assistant for a private pathology practice in Spokane, Wash,” says Dr. Crimp. “I think it is fascinating to correlate what we see in our clinical exams to what you see under the microscope, and honestly, pathology slides are beautiful to look at! It is great when pathologists can provide that last missing piece of the puzzle to help the clinician reach a diagnosis.”

The American Society of Dermatopathology’s Annual Meeting is a four-day educational and networking event intended to teach, aid in the dissemination of knowledge and encourage collaborative research to improve the quality of the practice of dermatopathology. The annual event gives current fellows, residents and medical students a chance to engage with lectures on current topics in dermatopathology, interactive sessions at the microscope, a self-assessment course, and opportunities for poster and abstract presentations.
