University of Washington Dermatology Visiting Dermatology Resident Diversity Award

Overview 

The University of Washington Department of Dermatology is offering awards to support a 2–4 week visiting rotation for dermatology residents in their 2nd or 3rd year of dermatology residency training at the time of the visiting rotation who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity. Visiting rotations take place between November 2024–June 2025.

Visiting residents will receive exceptional training in subspecialty, complex, or general dermatology, support academic interests and individualized career development through excellent mentoring relationships and networking, and will be introduced to fellowship and faculty opportunities.

Eligibility

Residents who will be enrolled in their 2nd or 3rd year of an ACGME-accredited dermatology residency program at the time of the visiting rotation, who have demonstrated interest in advancing diversity, and who are in good standing. Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Washington limited license and have the support of their program director.

Format  

• Participation in general dermatology, complex med-derm, and subspecialty clinics as well as consult service at our affiliated sites. Program sites include: University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
• Schedule tailored based on resident’s interest, as feasible
• Weekly academic time and professional development time for meetings with faculty
• Participation in all resident didactics during elective period
• Pairing with a faculty advisor and a resident peer mentor during elective

Credentialing & Licencing

4–6 month advance notice required for completing credentialing, licensing, onboarding, and establishing a Program Letter of Agreement with the visiting resident’s home institution to allow visiting residents to provide direct patient care. A program letter of agreement must be completed and signed prior to the start of rotation.

Funding

• Travel expenses up to $500
• Lodging expenses for up to 4 weeks up to $3000
• Additional expenses for meals and local transportation up to $500
• Reimbursement for WA Medical License expenses

How To Apply

• Gather application materials including a recommendation letter and certification of good standing from current Program Director of home institution, and current Curriculum Vitae.
• Draft statement of purpose that includes specific career interests and goals for the visiting rotation, and your qualifications for this award which could include your lived experience as an individual underrepresented in medicine, advocacy efforts, and/or longitudinal volunteer efforts with a community group, etc. Limit 500 words maximum.
• Complete and submit online application form, which includes that statement of purpose, and upload attachments.
