    Application process occurs in the Fall, capacity is 5 students for the pilot project 
  • All pathway students will enroll in and complete a broad survey elective BH510 “Humanities in Medicine” in Winter Quarter (Course Chair Mark Tonelli). This course will be an introductory course to multiple of the humanities disciplines for the medical professional including philosophy, epistemology, visual arts, narrative medicine, poetry, anthropology, history, and religion. 
  • Students are strongly encouraged to take other in-person elective classes in areas of the arts and humanities. Each elective Up to 2 classes in addition to the survey course can be taken for HAP credit 

The following electives can be taken for pathway credit:

  • MED 555: P-Mind, Body, And Pen: Writing And The Art Of Becoming A Physician
  • MED 556: Visual Thinking And Medical Diagnosis (SLN 18412)
  • The Human Face of Medicine 
  • UCONJ 531: Introduction To Mind Body Medicine — An Experiential Elective
  • UCONJ 565 The Healer's Art: Awakening The Heart Of Healthcare

All students must complete at least 6 online modules. The following are some examples: 

  • Working with Patient Stories (Required – must be completed first) 
  • The Art of the Humanistic Patient Interview (Required – must be completed before HAP clinical experiences) 
  • All of these modules (with the exception of the 2 required modules) consist of artwork, storytelling, history, and/or philosophy. Students will read, watch, and/or listen to the material in the course and reflect on their learning via a 300-word minimum journal entry or a creative expression* 

*Creative expression: Any original artwork (poem, sketch, painting, dance, music, etc) completed by the medical student that the coursework inspired and a brief summary of what that artwork meant to the student and how it relates to the module or learning experience

All students must complete 6 reflections of their pre-clinical blocks, elective courses, and/or rotations.

  • Students must have at least 1 reflection on a pre-clinical block, and 2 on clinical rotations 
  • The reflection can consist of a 300-word minimum journal entry or a creative expression* 
  • This reflection encourages students to take a moment and think more deeply on what some of their pre-clinical blocks, clinical rotations, and other learning experiences meant to them on their journeys to becoming physicians
  • These reflections will be shared with the pathway mentor. 

Capstone Project 

All students must complete a total of 2 faculty mentored projects: 1 during BH510 course & 1 during MS3/MS4 years

These projects will be submitted in the form of a portfolio and will include the following: 

  1. Proposal/application (Mentor sign-off prior to commencing and at completion of the project)
  2. Background exploration of what has already been done in this space
  3. Personal reflection on the topic of choice and on the creative process
  4. Exhibition of material (at the annual HAP event) 

Project Options  

Students are required to choose one of two project options.  

Art Creation Option: For this option students are to complete a small body of original artwork (such as 2-5 poems, short stories, sketches, paintings, videos of original compilations of dance or music, etc). The appropriate scope and extent of the project will be determined in collaboration with their mentor. 

Narrative Writing Option: For this option students will explore an aspect of healthcare that inspired them during their interactions with patients or caregivers, and create a narrative work that humanizes these experiences for providers and patients. The appropriate scope and extent of the project will be determined in collaboration with their mentor.   

HAP encourages all original artwork completed for the pathway projects to be shared with the greater UW School of Medicine community on the Openhearted website. HAP also encourages students to submit their work for publication in journals, magazines, and other outlets (some of which offer prizes).  

Community Involvement & Service 

  • Students must attend at least 3 events (and submit a short 100-word summary for each event) or be involved in the leadership of a student IG involved in promoting the humanities and/or the arts 
  • Student groups that qualify include: The Medical Humanities and Narrative Medicine IG, Arts for Health IG, Musicians at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Humans of UW SOM 
  • Events that qualify: Any event whose focus is the sharing of, discussion of, or creation of 
  • patient/provider/student/ or community member artwork or storytelling. Some ideas are events put on by the student IGs mentioned above, UW Health Sciences Common Book events, Sacred Breath: Writing and Storytelling series sponsored by American Indian Studies 
  • If students have questions about events that may qualify, please contact the pathway advisor

Mentorship

Students are required to find a UW faculty mentor. There are several UW physician artists that students can reach out to for mentorship. The pathway advisor can help connect students and mentors.
