VA Puget Sound Welcomes New Dermatology Leadership & Attendings
The UW Medicine Division of Dermatology is excited to announce the appointment of April Schachtel, MD, to the position of Section Head of Dermatology in the Hospital and Specialty Medicine Service Line for the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System, effective January 14, 2022.
In addition to her new position, Dr. Schachtel also serves as an Acting Instructor in the Division of Dermatology, the VA Site Rotation Director for residents and the Director of UW Internal Medicine Residency Dermatology Rotations.
Dr. Schachtel completed her residency in Internal Medicine in 2015 and Dermatology Residency in 2018, both at the University of Washington. She joined the dermatology faculty at the Puget Sound VA Section in 2018. Dr. Schachtel is an outstanding educator and has multiple clinical and academic interests including dermatologic manifestations of endocrine diseases, nail disorders, rheumatologic dermatology, and the effects of climate change on skin.
We also want to thank Dr. Phil Fleckman for his service as Section Head for Dermatology over the past seven years. We were fortunate to have Dr. Fleckman’s leadership and the support of the UW Division of Dermatology during this period of rebuilding and growth. Dr. Fleckman has long been a figurehead at the VA Puget Sound, and has been a champion and advocate for veterans and their families. Thank you, Dr. Fleckman, for your incredible leadership and contributions to the VA!
Dr. Fleckman will continue seeing patients at the VA, the Dermatology Clinic at UWMC Roosevelt, and teaching as a Professor for UW Dermatology.
“I want to thank Phil for his steadfast leadership at the VA. He brought VA dermatology through some very challenging times. He has built a wonderful team to take care of veterans and teach our residents.” –Dr. April Schachtel
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Schachtel into this new leadership role!
Welcome New VA Attendings!
The VA has also recently welcomed two new attendings from the Division of Dermatology! Dr. Sigrid Collier, who just returned from a one-year clinical research fellowship through the NIH, began serving patients again at the VA beginning Oct. 11, in addition to being an Acting Instructor in the Division of Dermatology. Dr. Benji Perin, former UW Dermatology resident, officially started as an Acting Instructor on Sept. 26, 2021. Dr. Perin will be treating patients at the VA. Both Drs. Collier and Perin will see patients at the VA Seattle campus, where they will also lead the Continuity Clinic for UW Derm residents.
